Chapter Nineteen

After that disastrous morning, I needed a cleanser. Remy and I sat on the floor of our living room, glitter, papier mâché, glue, and streamers covering the hardwood floors around us. My mother would have a heart attack over this mess if she weren’t already dead.

Growing up, my mother had taught me how to spell cleaning supplies to keep the house in perfect condition. Everything had a specific place. Walls were always a white or gray. Furniture navy or white. Very few pictures on the walls. Instead my mother liked priceless art and artifacts to decorate our house, things that had no meaning.

I looked around at the mess covering the living room. We’d bought some covers for the couches, bright and floral-print, that Isaac said made it look like we lived at the Rainforest Cafe—which I think was supposed to be an insult. We’d also been testing out different paint colors for the monochrome walls, so splashes of yellows, blues, and greens streaked across the walls. We hadn’t decided on a color yet for the living room, or any other room in the house.

“Are you sure we can’t just create a spell for this?” I asked Remy, lifting up a hand with newspaper and thick glue stuck to my skin.

“Yes!” Isaac said from where he floated above us.

Martin had dropped him off earlier this morning, saying he had gardening to do at the bed and breakfast, but he said he’d be back to pick up the genie later while I foraged for items for the tracing spell.

Which I was going to do later. For now, I needed to help my daughter with her school project. Remy wasn’t going to come second to anything, not even a genie I desperately wanted out of my life.

My daughter scowled at me. “No, Mom. We’re not doing a spell for this. Everyone in the senior class has to make a contribution to our float, and we’re not allowed to use magic. I’ve told you that already.”

Isaac flopped in the air, laying down, draping an arm over his eyes. “But this is so boring. Can’t you guys at least entertain me like Martin does? He’s very talented with the cello. And Bones is great with the drums. Martin also has the best gossip. Did you know that Myrtle once plotted to kill the Serpent?”

“I’m sorry we’re so boring,” I replied drily.

Isaac let his arm fall from his face, peeking over it at me. “Not forgiven.”

I flapped my hand, trying to get the newspaper that was glued to it off. “Remy, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m with Isaac. It would be way easier if we could throw a few ingredients in the cauldron, wave our wands, and poof, we’ve got your contribution.”

“Is that how spells work?” Isaac said, his eyes widening in excitement.

I kept forgetting that he knew nothing about magic.

I stood and walked over to the cauldron that sat in our hearth. “Okay, how about this? I won’t create a spell
